Restaurant food prep/cleaner
Description
We are seeking a dedicated Restaurant Food Prep/Cleaner with a strong focus on food safety to join our team in the Waterloo Region. The ideal candidate will have restaurant experience, a passion for maintaining high cleanliness standards, and the ability to train others on food safety protocols in compliance with local regulations.
Responsibilities:
Prepare ingredients (e.g., chopping vegetables, portioning meats, assembling dishes) following strict food safety guidelines.
Clean and sanitize kitchen surfaces, equipment, and utensils to meet Waterloo Region health and safety standards.
Ensure proper storage, labeling, and rotation of food items to prevent contamination and spoilage.
Train new staff on food safety practices, including proper handling, storage, and sanitation procedures.
Monitor and maintain kitchen hygiene, including floors, workstations, and storage areas.
Dispose of waste properly and maintain a clean and organized kitchen environment.
Assist with inventory checks to ensure food safety compliance for all ingredients.
Report any food safety or equipment issues to management immediately.
Collaborate with kitchen and front-of-house staff to maintain a safe and efficient work environment.
Qualifications:
Minimum 1-2 years of experience in a restaurant kitchen or food prep role.
Valid Food Handler Certification for Ontario (or ability to obtain within 30 days of hire).
In-depth knowledge of Waterloo Region food safety regulations and best practices.
Experience training or mentoring others, preferably in food safety or kitchen operations.
Strong attention to detail and commitment to maintaining a clean and safe kitchen.
Ability to work in a fast-paced environment while prioritizing food safety.
Excellent communication skills to train and guide team members effectively.
Physical ability to stand for long periods, lift up to 30 lbs, and perform repetitive tasks.
Flexibility to work evenings, weekends, and holidays as required.
Preferred Skills:
Familiarity with local Waterloo Region health inspection processes.
Ability to adapt training methods to different learning styles for effective staff education.
