My wife and I look after an elderly gentleman mainly in downtown Charlottetown. Our awesome, Jack-of-all-trades cleaner/caregiver is moving out west this summer, and we are looking for a new amazing person to join our non-smoking, LGB-positive mainly vegetarian, household, part time.
1-3 times a month on average, $20/hour to start, odd jobs including cleaning/laundry, some shopping/food prep and light elder care. Could increase to one or two times a week, in the coming months.
Interviews last week of April; job to start May or June.
ABOUT US
* I’m a semi-retired educator & the main point of contact, and my wife is a pilot; she is based out of Toronto, so we go back-and-forth geographically
* Elderly gentleman (main “client”) is a retired math professor; he is really good at chess and likes language, jokes and grammar; has spent time in Washington, DC, India, Montreal, Paris and Mexico
* In small doses, he can be quite charming, but he does have some “interesting“ quirks, probably due to undiagnosed OCD and autism. Doesn’t always read social cues well, but is fairly harmless. Just somewhat crotchety.
* All strictly non smokers
* Sneakers the Wonderdog — largish, energetic, good with people but really aggressive with other dogs
ABOUT YOU (our ideal candidate)
*Must Haves*
- Experience with cleaning or experience with grumpy old men
- Understanding of adult autism and/or OCD
- Non smoker
- Clear, timely communicator
- Be able to work in downtown Charlottetown
- Min 2 positive references (3 would be better)
*Nice to Haves*
- fluent in more than one language, especially Russian and/or Spanish
- Geriatric experience AND cleaning experience
- Experience with autism and/or OCD
- Your own cleaning supplies, including vac
- Impeccable grammar
- Interest in Math or Chess
- Ability to use a drill or be otherwise handy (from time to time small handy jobs arise)
THE JOB:
* Cleaning our two bedroom/2 bathroom apartment in downtown, Charlottetown, including laundry (bedsheets/towels)
* Bringing the old man water and encouraging him to drink
* Occasional meal or snack preparation, and sharing meals; eating together
* Occasional grocery getting or other errands
* Potentially acting as general companion, possibly going out for coffee together from time to time
WHAT’S IN IT FOR YOU
* $20/hour to start with performance-based raise after 6 months and annually after that
* Eat with the old man (free food!)
* Learn to improve your chess game (if you play) and/or math skills
* Ongoing mentoring with teaching and/or language if wanted, and excellent reference for future jobs if successful
