The Monthly Meeting of the Peterborough Astronomical Association's (PAA) will take place June 5th as a “Hybrid Meeting”, both online and in-person at our traditional physical location of the Rotary Education Centre/Guest Services Building, Riverview Park Zoo. Nothing can stop the spread of information and knowledge by the members of the PAA, including our ability to accommodate those that can’t physically be at the meeting. To participate via Zoom, just make sure that in advance, you opened a (free) Zoom account on whatever iphone or tablet or device you wish to participate with and then contact https://www.peterboroughastronomy.com/zoom_register.php for the password and link to our evenings classes and presentations. If you wish to participate in person you are more than welcome to do so at the Zoo.
Our “Novice Astronomy Classes” are focused on the practical aspects of learning about astronomy. You will be introduced to astronomy related subjects at a very basic level, but in a logical sequence. In this month’s Novice Astronomy Class, we continue with the Solar System Series with an exciting journey to the giant of our planetary family, Jupiter. Dominating the night sky with its brilliant glow, Jupiter has fascinated observers for centuries, from early astronomers tracking its motion to modern spacecraft uncovering its many secrets. More massive than all the other planets combined, Jupiter is a colossal world of swirling storms, powerful magnetic fields and intriguing moons. Its Great Red Spot, a storm larger than Earth itself, has raged for generations beneath bands of colourful clouds. Yet Jupiter is far more than just a beautiful object in the eyepiece. This gas giant may have played a crucial role in shaping the architecture of our solar system and protecting the inner planets from countless impacts. Intrigued? Join us on June 5th to explore the remarkable wonders of the solar system’s largest planet.
During the interactive segment of the class, we will examine how tenacious life can be and its ability to exploit extreme environments.
Tune in to be enlightened! If you are even remotely interested, be on-line by 6:00 p.m. to see what you can learn about exploring the Universe around you. The classes will run about 45 minutes each session, before our regular meeting resumes. There’s no obligation to stay for the meeting that follows, but you are more than welcome to if you wish.
Shortly after 7:00 p.m. we will have a presentation by PAA Sponsor, Ray Khan, entitled “New Generation of Amateur Astronomer”. Ray is the owner/operator of Khanscope Centre, Dufferin St. in Toronto and his decades of experience in the hobby will inform his presentation this evening. Whether joining us on-line or in-person you will not be disappointed and you will learn a lot! Why not check this out? You don’t need to be a member to see this presentation or anything else listed. The price is right…it costs you nothing but your time.
The Sky This Month will be posted on our club website for all to access.
There will also be the usual opportunities to have your questions answered, at no charge. This is an all ages meeting and the venue is totally barrier free at the Zoo or just relax at home and “live and learn” as they say. Coiled Basket with Woodburned Insert (Beginner/Intermediate)
Many cultures and peoples around the world have used a variety of natural materials to create baskets that are both beautiful and utilitarian. Grasses, reeds, pine needles, and bark are just a few of the examples of items that can be dried and turned into baskets. While a variety of techniques exist to join these materials, the one we will focus on in this workshop is coiling. This ancient technique involves making coils and stitching them together to make a basket. We will also be making our own wooden inserts using a drill, sander, and woodburning. Patterns will be provided for all skill levels, but if you have an image in mind, feel free to bring it along. At the end of this workshop, you will have made a small basket with natural materials and gained the fundamentals to create even more complex designs in the future.
Woven Natural Fibre Bag (Beginner/Intermediate)
Nature has so many wonderful materials to offer in our local environment that can be harvested, dried, and woven into beautiful and useful items to enjoy for years to come. In this workshop, you’ll learn how to use grasses, bark, cattails, lily leaves, wood, and more to create a woven and twined bag or purse. These can be created freeform or using a mold. If you have a shape in mind, feel free to bring along a mold (wooden block, old container, etc.). While this is a beginner class, any experience with basketry, sewing, or weaving will be an asset.

Too often, I hear about beginner students horror stories about learning in the classical vein or the lack of purpose in general lesson plans. My focus is to create a unique lesson plan for each student to maximize efficiency while incorporating my teaching style into the plan. I incorporate musical expression, technique, and theory into each lesson while taking we've learnt and reworking it into something original. Composition being the ultimate goal; as we learn a lot quicker thinking for ourselves. There are no limitations, I've taught and performed in many genres: Classical, Jazz, Rock,Pop,Reggae, Blues, Hip-hop, Gospel, Fusion, the list goes on... So who am I? I'm a 24 year old musician who's extremely passionate about ALL music. - Completed 3 years Mohawk College Applied Music program. - 5 years teaching experience. (Includes leading band rehearsal and performances) - Developed and promoted shows - Constantly studying the scripts of the great classical composers. - Most important: Patient and Understanding. The lessons I'm offering are: Guitar, Bass, Keyboard, Recording, and Drums. (Drums taught by another teacher) We will discuss: Structure (Form), Harmony, Melody, Counterpoint, Sightreading and Improvisation while meeting the technical demands of instrument.

Spring Term: Woodburning – Pyrography – 4 weeks
Wednesday, April 22 to Wednesday, May 13
6:00 pm to 9:00 pm
The course will focus on learning the basics of using a woodburning tool, including how to prepare a surface for burning, transfer patterns, safety, and techniques for employing the various tips. However, students will also learn more intermediate/advanced techniques, including adding texture, highlights, and shading to a variety of images and surfaces. While patterns will be provided, students should also feel free to be creative and pursue projects of interest to them.
While all materials and tools will be provided, anyone with their own woodburning system or woodworking tools is encouraged to bring them.

In this course, students will be able to deepen their understanding of locally available basketry materials and fundamental techniques. We will learn how to harvest and process local plants that can be easily found in backyards, urban neighborhoods, and other natural areas, with an emphasis on invasive species. Additionally, there will be hands-on demonstrations of key basketry techniques, such as cordage, braiding, weaving, twining, coiling, plaiting, and twill. This course is well-suited for those with basketry experience at all levels (including beginners) who want to learn how to identify, harvest, process, and use the wide variety of plants nature has to offer in Peterborough and the surrounding areas. Students are also welcome to bring any materials from their own foraging. Throughout the course, students will make 4-5 baskets from a variety of materials using various techniques.

For the last 5 years I've been performing all over the GTA, including: festivals; pride, multi-cultural, afro-fest, private functions, restaurants, bars, and producing my local show while producing tracks for local Toronto artists. This year, I'm building my independent music school from my home studio. (Big Project!) Too often, I hear about beginner students horror stories about learning in the classical vein or the lack of purpose in general lesson plans. My focus is to create a unique lesson plan for each student to maximize efficiency while incorporating my teaching style into the plan. I incorporate musical expression, technique, and theory into each lesson while taking we've learnt and reworking it into something original. Composition being the ultimate goal; as we learn a lot quicker thinking for ourselves. There are no limitations, I've taught and performed in many genres: Classical, Jazz, Rock,Pop,Reggae, Blues, Hip-hop, Gospel, Fusion, the list goes on... So who am I? I'm a 24 year old musician who's extremely passionate about ALL music. - Completed 3 years Mohawk College Applied Music program. - 5 years teaching experience. (Includes leading band rehearsal and performances) - Developed and promoted shows - Constantly studying the scripts of the great classical composers. - Most important: Patient and Understanding. The lessons I'm offering are: Guitar, Bass, Keyboard, Recording, and Drums. (Drums taught by another teacher) We will discuss: Structure (Form), Harmony, Melody, Counterpoint, Sightreading and Improvisation while meeting the technical demands of instrument.
Each lesson will be 30 - 45 minutes with the option to have the lesson at your location/home. My rates are fair and negotiable. We all have our lives and circumstances going on; it's okay. Learn the traditional art of woodburning by creating your own Wooden Sign.

In this workshop, you’ll be able make a wonderful sign using reclaimed wood while also learning a new skill! The class will focus on the basics of using a woodburning tool, including how to prepare a surface for burning, transfer patterns, safety, and techniques for using the various tips. A variety of patterns will be provided for all skill levels; however, feel free to bring your own design.

Pine needle basketry is one of the oldest-known coiled basketry techniques. In this workshop, you’ll learn the basic methods of making coils from locally available pine needles (3-4 inches in length) and stitching them together with a needle to form a simple basket (2 to 6 inches in size). Many cultures and peoples around the world have used a variety of natural materials to create baskets that are both beautiful and utilitarian for thousands of years. Carroll Baker, "Canada's First Lady of Country Music" has announced plans for her final tour in the spring of 2025. After an extraordinary career she will grace stages across the country one more time bringing her cherished songs and signature performances to life "One Final Time".
Carroll Baker has been a powerhouse in the industry for over 55 years. Her remarkable career includes more than twenty #1 hits, fourteen albums, four compilation albums, and an astounding fifty five singles, solidifying her place as one of the most celebrated figures in Canadian music.
Carroll's final tour will cover more than twenty cities where fans will have the chance to experience the magic of her greatest hits and timeless classics one last time.
Her career launched in 1970 with her breakout song, "Mem-ries of Home", one that remained on the charts for an amazing twenty six weeks. Subsequent hits included “Ten Little Fingers”, and the AA anthem “One Drink Is One Too Many (and a thousand’s not enough)”. Between 1970 and 1982 she released 31 consecutive charting singles and hosted her own CBC television show, The Carroll Baker Jamboree. Her platinum album Hymns of Gold and five Juno Awards cemented her status as a country music legend.
