City Opera Vancouver presents the Canadian premiere of composer Missy Mazzoli’s contemporary masterpiece Song from the Uproar: The Lives and Deaths of Isabelle Eberhardt, on stage February 29 to March 3, 2024 at the York Theatre. One of the most adventurous women of her era, the opera tells the extraordinary life story of the complex, multifaceted Eberhardt - from the death of her family, through her journeys in the North African desert, to her ecstatic religious conversion, and ultimately to her tragic drowning. The role will be brought to life by mezzo soprano Marion Newman, one of the brightest stars in Canada’s classical music firmament. Newman will be supported by a five-person chorus: Katie Fraser, Christina Demeo, Emma Jang, Kiho Sohn, and Jason Sommerville. The work is directed by acclaimed theatre practitioner Ann Hodges, under the baton of City Opera Vancouver Artistic Director Gordon Gerrard. For tickets and information, visit: cityoperavancouver.com

DanceHouse and Dancers of Damelahamid present the Vancouver premiere of the politically-charged and spiritually-centred work, Vástádus eana – The answer is land, on stage February 23 and 24, 2024 at 8pm at the Vancouver Playhouse. Choreographed by Elle Sofe Sara, the full-length work is a powerful exploration and reclamation of the central tenets of Sámi cultural identity: community and kinship between people and nature. Having been subjected to almost-total cultural obliteration through residential schools, language suppression, and religious conversion, Vástádus eana – The answer is land embodies a critically important message about the foundational attachment arising from community and culture, and offers the possibility of a new relationship with the natural world. Through a radical act of resilience, the performers open the evening by guiding the audience through a traditional spiritual practice outdoors before shepherding them into the theatre. Bumblebee Breath & the Vagus Nerve breath and meditation.
The role of the Vagus Nerve
The vagus nerve plays a crucial role in the activation of the parasympathetic nervous system in our bodies. The vagus is the tenth cranial nerve, extending from the brain stem, all the way down the neck and thorax down to the abdomen. Its trajectory forms the neural and hormonal pathway of the brain-gut axis, which is heavily involved in establishing our feelings of mental wellbeing. An estimated 90% of our serotonin is produced in the gut, with its gut-to-brain transportation relying on the vagus nerve. In the thorax, it provides the main parasympathetic supply to the heart and stimulates a reduction in the heart rate. The vagus nerve is also responsible for the regulation of our respiratory rate.
This calming Bumblebee breath heals and soothes your mind and nervous system. By using a gentle humming sound, like the sound of a bumblebee, you send vibrations throughout your whole being. These vibrations signal to your nervous system to switch into its parasympathetic branch, which aids in resting and digesting. You also stimulate the vagus nerve, which runs through your throat.
The Vagus Nerve and Yoga
Practices such as yoga and meditation are believed to stimulate the vagus nerve. Vagus stimulation helps us to balance the functions of the internal organs and bring us into a calmer state of being, reducing inflammation and triggering the body’s natural healing system.
Room & Pillar provides dry salt therapy through the exposure of thousands of pounds of Himalayan salt and a machine called a halo generator that grinds pharmaceutical-grade salt particles and releases them into the cave.
The Health Benefits of Dry Salt Therapy Include:
ALLERGIES • ASTHMA • SKIN CONDITIONS • STRESS • HEADACHES • ARTHRITIS.All levels welcome.
We recommend bringing your yoga mat. If you need a mat, they are available for a $3 rental fee.

Join us at St Mary’s for a unique blend of exceptional jazz rooted in the context of meditation and prayer. Please join musician extraordinaire Ryan Oliver, pianist Tony Genge, bassist Louis Rudner, and drummer Kelby MacNayr, as they take us on a journey.
Evolving out of two ancient services of prayer as the sun is setting—vespers and compline—the service of Evensong is an opportunity to put the events of the past day into perspective, to ground one’s body, mind and spirit in preparation for the restorative night of sleep, when in our dreaming, our subconscious will continue the creative work of making sense of our experiences.
Whether you are a seasoned jazz lover or a newcomer to the genre, you will be sure to find something to speak to you at this unique and moving experience of making sense of your day. Don’t miss your chance to be a part of this inspiring and intimate celebration of faith and music. All are welcome!
A collection will be taken in support of this ongoing series.
