Amazing Ocean and mountain views in very well developed and safe area (there used to be one of the first USA military bases back in WWII). There are McDonalds, Restaurants, grocery stores, hardware and department stores, local market places. Its not a "gates community of 2-3 buildings" - its a "gated AREA" of ~5km by ~5km. Condo building has year-round outdoor pools, gym, sauna, social areas with air-hockey, table tennis, billiard and other games. This is a very well-designed attractive villa. There is great attention to detail in both the furnishings and layout. We were both impressed by the tasteful decorative touches from the dried flowers to tile mosaics on the walls. An example of the design is the large built in closets in the upstairs bedrooms. I have never stayed in a rental with as much closet and drawer space. The property was extremely clean and well-maintained. The beds were all comfortable. The villa is spacious both in the grounds and inside. Where some may have been tempted to have 4 or 5 bedrooms, the 3 good sized bedroom and large living areas given a certain dignity and sense of spaciousness. The kitchen was well equipped as far as pots and pans, dishes and cutlery. The appliances all worked.
There was a beautiful view of the valley from this hillside location from both inside the villa and the outside terraces and pool deck. One can see Alvor, Lagos and Portimao along the coast and amazing twinkling lights at night time. The villa and around the pool deck is very private. The villa is set well back from the road down a steep dead end lane and so no passing traffic. The location gives a sense of peacefulness.
We walked into the lovely town of Monchique a few times and also ate at the nice restaurant at the top of the lane - O Luar da Foia, rated highly in Tripadvisor. You need to be reasonably fit given the road is steep. Monchique has a large modern InterMarche supermarket and some smaller grocery stores and butcher shops. There are also a number of pleasant cafes. There is a large shopping mall in Portimao. A car is recommended. If you have one, the villa makes a good base for exploring the region.
The west coast is about 30 min away by secondary road, while Portimao and the A22 main tollway is about 15 min south. We went as far as Odeceixe in the north west. Despite the weather during or stay in November, we were able to use the pool a bit when the sun was shining. We would not hesitate to rent from Nigel again. He was easy to deal with and extremely responsive to any questions. Given its high quality, the villa is a real bargain in the low and shoulder season. Highly recommend it.-TripAdvisor

Playa Dorada is a 6 unit gated condo development built by a North American builder, north of Bahia de Caraquez and about 5 km south of Canoa, Ecuador. The condos sit directly on the beach. Simply unlock the gate and the beach is there. Sitting on the balcony, enjoy the view of the ocean, the locals bringing in their catch, spectacular sunsets and a beautiful infinity pool which appears to drop into the Pacific Ocean.

Next to the infinity pool is a covered gazebo complete with a propane BBQ, tables, chairs and a sink with running water.
