RAMEA, NL - Ramea is a small village located on Northwest Island, one of a group of five major islands located off the south coast of Newfoundland, Canada. The island is approximately 3.1 km long by 1 km wide. The remaining major islands in the archipelago are Great (or Big) Island, Middle Island, Harbour Island, and South West Island.
The community, originally settled in the early 19th century for its proximity to rich fishing grounds and safe anchorages, was once a thriving fishing village. The town of Ramea was incorporated in 1951. Since the cod moratorium of 1992, the isolated community has struggled to survive, having declined to about 50% of its peak population of 1,120 in the 1970s.
2009 was Ramea's Come Home Year.
Ramea is home to a large number of plants, which include the purple pitcher plant and bakeapple. Furthermore, the island and surrounding islands serve as a fall and winter home to many migratory seabirds.
There are a number of walks on the island, including a circular walk around the back of the island that passes by Northwest Head lighthouse, one of the few remaining manned lighthouses in Canada. The walk also includes the wind-diesel plant.
Walking to the island's highest point on top of Man O'War Hill offers excellent views of archipelago and across to White Bear Bay.
Every year the islands plays host to a traditional music festival on the second weekend of August and many people living in the community enjoy hunting different species of seabirds, such as Eider Ducks and Murres (Turres).
In 2004, Ramea was chosen for the site of "Canada's first wind-diesel demonstration project which was completed with the support of CETC-Ottawa. Six 65 kW wind turbines were installed on the island of Ramea , Newfoundland . The objective of the project was to demonstrate that the Wind-Diesel Integrated Control System (WDICS) can be used to displace diesel power generation by introducing wind to the island's grid and to show significant energy efficiency and reliability for northern, remote or isolated locations. -
CANMET Energy Technology Centre-Ottawa (CETC-Ottawa)The wind-diesel pilot program generates around 1 million kWh electricity per year and offsets approximately 750 tonnes of emissions annually.
Ramea was selected as the pilot site for a Wind-Hydrogen power system. The project was undertaken by Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro in partnership with Natural Resources Canada, Memorial University, University of New Brunswick and Frontier Power Systems. The wind-hydrogen system was completed in 2010.
In the early nineteenth century, settlers formed several small independent communities on the Ramea Islands. In the early 1940s, all inhabitants moved to Northwest Island and formed the Town of Ramea. The location provided an excellent harbour and was strategic for exploiting the fishery.
In the mid to late 1800s John Penney & Sons developed a salt fish operation which rapidly grew into fresh fish processing with deep sea trawlers. This became the basis for the town's economy.
Since the collapse of the East Coast fishery and the closure of the fish plant, Ramea has been working diligently towards building a diversified economy and attracting new industry. It is the home of "Newfoundland Aqua Products Incorporated"' a pioneer in Newfoundland's Seaweed/Kelp Industry. Ramea also has a strong volunteer spirit, as evidenced by its well trained Fire Department, its Community Cable Television Co-Operative, and its variety of community service organizations.
Ramea is a fascinating place to explore by mountain bike. A scenic walking trail provides a splendid view of the coastline and leads to the 100 year old lighthouse, where ancient granite rock formations lie below the lighthouse tower.
For those who like the view from above, climb the steps to the top of "Man-O-War Hill", or visit our viewing and picnic area, to experience a breathtaking view of the Ramea Islands and miles of clear blue ocean. Ramea is a stopover for many migratory birds and home to a variety of seabirds. Bald eagles nest on the surrounding islands and two puffin colonies are nearby. Residents of Ramea have long been known as "Ramea Puffins" and the puffin is its recognized mascot. There have also been sightings of rare and unusual birds in Ramea.
The Ramea Heritage Center provides visitor information, a sense of Ramea's history and a selection of locally handcrafted and manufactured items. More of the Town's history can be experienced by visiting the War Memorial, the Town's History Board and any of the Town's cemeteries.
Recreational facilities include a ball field, an outdoor multi-purpose rink and an outdoor swimming pool, which is a major summer attraction.
White Bear Bay is just a short boat ride away. This spectacular fjord is home to an excellent salmon river and an abundance of wildlife, including moose, caribou and black bear. A boat ride along the coast near Ramea can also include visits to the cemeteries of several resettled communities.
For a sample of raw outport talent and a "rousing" good time, visitors can take in the "Rock Island Music Festival," a two day event held annually on the second weekend in August. Enjoy performances by local musicians and entertainers and delight in traditional Newfoundland cuisine.
