Research and analysis skills, such as an extensive knowledge of fundamental analysis, are transferable to any industry that relies heavily on data. Key Duties & Responsibilities:In-depth analysis of publicly-traded and privately-held securities (equities, bonds, derivatives contracts, real estate, private equity assets, private loans, infrastructure, commodities, currencies, etc.) via the analysis of corporate financial statements, industry and peer-group data, computer simulations (e.g., Monte Carlo and VaR simulations), macroeconomic datasets (e.g., inflation and international trade data), structured model outputs (growth and payback models, option pricing models, etc)., financial formula and ratio construction and analysis, management interviews, and alternative data (e.g., changes in app store traction or government orders of a product, etc.).Identifying new securities and private investments suitable for the firm’s various strategies and client portfolios; performing due diligence using the analytical tools mentioned above; and producing point and range estimates of intrinsic value (i.e., ‘target’ price) via model-based forecasts, quantitative simulations, and asset/liability and cash flow pricing/discounting.Design and construction of both institutional investment funds and individual client portfolios managed according to specific mandates (e.g., target rates of return, volatility maximums, ESG constraints, absolute performance, etc.); ongoing monitoring of underlying business performance, price volatility, industry trends, and investment suitability of securities after purchase; ongoing monitoring of portfolio value, volatility, diversification, and exposures post-construction; and generating strategies for portfolio rebalancing and tactical asset allocation shifts on a rolling basis. The identification and execution of institutional trading strategies (e.g., the use of volume-weighted average price algorithms (VWAP)) to obtain best price and execution on bulk securities buy/sell orders with minimal market price impact under variable time constraints. The design, construction, and implementation of a proprietary, model-based trading, rebalancing, and performance-monitoring system, which will enable the firm’s portfolio management software to aggregate, categorize, and trade all firm assets under management (AUM) in bulk: allowing any combination of securities be traded simultaneously across accounts, and allowing client accounts’ exposures to any combination of securities to be analyzed at various levels of aggregation. As a result of this system, the firm will be able to operate and manage numerous specialized institutional strategies at scale.Generation of recurring (e.g., quarterly, annual, etc.) performance measurement and attribution reports, quantitatively evaluating the underlying drivers of the performance and volatility of the firm’s various investment strategies and client portfolios within specified time intervals. Analytical conclusions will be derived in relation to the future implications of each strategy’s risk and return exposures.Construction of bespoke investment strategies (e.g., the monetization of a concentrated securities position via the use of a short sale against the box, the implementation of a long options straddle to capture mis-priced volatility, merger arbitrage via long/short positions, etc.).Actively participating in recurring investment committee meetings, presenting analytical findings, research results, and actionable recommendations to the firm’s portfolio managers. The CFA intern will take an active role in the firm’s investment decision-making process.Preparing institutional and individual investment policy statements (IPS), defining the quantitative and qualitative parameters within which asset allocations and investment decisions can be made.Keep up to date with the wider marketplace and regulatory environment, including operations, legal, and ethical requirements; the CFA Institute Code of Ethics and Standards of Professional Conduct, and the Global Investment Performance Standards (GIPS).
