Nanaimo Ceramic Arts is having a big seconds sale to prepare for our move. Thanks to our beautiful students and members, we need to grow, so at the end of June, we are moving the studio downtown to a bigger space. Before that, on May 27th at 10 am, we are opening our doors and courtyard to showcase our teachers' work and sell items we don't want to move with. Demo pieces, seconds sale items from the gallery will be brought out into the "hopefully" sunshine to share with you. There will be many seconds by Arundel Studios, Storm Valley Ceramics and Danica Ceramica. Enter door prizes and learn about our new space at 115 Chapel Street.

I'm so excited to announce that Buddha Beats Yoga is collaborating with sound bowl healing again! What a beautiful way the shed the layers of the past. Upon your arrival at Bliss Lounge Yoga Studio, we will head upstairs to the beautiful lakeview lounge, that has the most amazing view of the lake then let the yoga begin. I’m so excited about this one!! I Join me Aleena McKinnon and Michael Van Soest for a 60-minute journey of Yin Yoga and Sound Bath Therapy, in this amazing space. Big juicy exhales as we melt of you day, letting go of trauma and the stresses of our life. I Aleena will guided you through beautiful mediation at the end of class as Michael takes us away with his beautiful sound bowls.
Sound baths are all the rage in wellness right now, and for good reason. The combination of whale-like echoes, Tibetan bowls, and melodic hums is enough to send anyone into a total trance of tranquility. Often times the experience is passive, with participants cozying up on their backs for meditation while being bathed in vibrations. Sound bath sessions are reportedly good for easing chronic pain and decreasing stress and anxiety. The end results depend on the person—and the bath. Some report feeling energized and balanced, while others are ready for their afternoon siesta.
Yin yoga and sound baths are celebrated for their ability to calm the mind and body. They also come with little movement, as it’s more of a focus on the internal than the external, making it a solid selection for an epic shower of sound. From quartz crystal bowls to a gong, to chimes—different instruments can be played for the duration of certain poses to help the yogi to connect more with the pose.
Sound healing is for the mind, body, and soul. It offers relaxation and deep healing of the nervous system. The power of sound is such that it can alter brainwaves from beta to alpha (relaxation), theta (meditative state) and even delta waves (sleep) and provides relaxation and healing of the nervous system.
Michael, a conscious sound healer, will be facilitating the evening of sound with 15 crystal singing bowls and harmonic toning using his voice. Over the years, Michael has a developed a natural ability to tune into the energetics of any surrounding environment, and with his intuition allows for conscious adjustments to take place using the combination of singing bowls and his voice with harmonic toning. Before getting into singing bowls back in 2011, Michael was brought up playing classical piano, and using intuition to channel through melodies. With singing bowls it is now all about allowing the sound to move with intuition for the greatest healing and integration possible.
This class is about relaxing and letting go. We will move very slowly a moving meditation with the breath. Watery, fluid, rhythmic, simple, sweet movements. After class, we will enjoy some tea and have a change to connect and chat about the experience.
All levels welcome.
We recommend bringing your yoga mat. If you need a mat please let me know.

"One on its Own or Together as a Whole" is Brianne Siu's solo exhibition featuring new work produced at Nanaimo Ceramic Arts as their most recent Artist-in-Residence. Centred on the theme of play, Brianne uses coloured slips and clay to add a playful quality to her work.
This new body of work uses slip-casting as a method of making with a new set of moulds made at Brianne's previous residency at Medalta. The geometric and simple forms function well on their own and stack well together, inspiring the title of the exhibition. Their innate simplicity and repetition create a blank canvas to explore colourful and playful additions to each piece.
Catch the opening reception of this show at Nanaimo Ceramic Arts Studio and Gallery on April 28th, 2023 from 6-8pm at 140 Wallace St. The show will be open until May 13th, 2023 during regular hours. See you there!

The Valencia Baryton Project was formed by colleagues from the opera of the Palau de les Arts (Valencia) and the Orchestre Nationale de Montpellier with the vision of performing the nearly 160 works written by Franz Joseph Haydn for the baryton. At the heart of the ensemble is the traditional baryton trio – baryton, viola, and violoncello – for which Haydn wrote 123 works of outstanding beauty during his time as the court composer for the Prince Esterhazy of Austria. With Matthew Baker, one of only a handful baryton performers in the world, the Valencia Baryton Project have delighted audiences in North, Central and South America as well as Europe with what is considered to have been the pinnacle of aristocratic instruments of the classical era. Their work has been described as ‘delightfully inventive”

Youth 20/20 Can, in partnership with the City of Nanaimo, presents The Wisdom of Trauma movie screening featuring Dr. Gabor Maté and a panel discussion with professionals.
In The Wisdom of Trauma, we travel alongside physician, bestselling author and Order of Canada recipient Dr. Gabor Maté to explore why our western society is facing such epidemics. This is a journey with a man who has dedicated his life to understanding the connection between illness, addiction, trauma and society. For over a decade he worked in Vancouver’s Downtown East Side with patients challenged by drug addiction and mental illness.
“Trauma is not what happens to you. Trauma is what happens inside you, as a result of what happens to you.” — Gabor Maté
The screening is on March 10, 2023, at the Vancouver Island Conference Centre. Doors will open at 5 PM, and the event will start at 5:30 PM. Following the 88-minute movie, we will have a panel discussion with professionals in the field.
We would like to thank Mosaic Forest Management for sponsoring the event.

On March 3rd from 6-8pm, join Jody Lewis and the NCA family to mark the opening of this gallery showcase.
Jody Lewis, maker behind Good Wheel Ceramics, took a road less traveled to find his way as a full-time potter. After completing his undergrad in biology and then starting his Public Health Master’s in 2018 Jody was introduced to ceramics and quickly became immersed. The obsession grew into a passion, and when the pandemic hit, his wife Robyn, encouraged Jody to use the time to create what is now Good Wheel Ceramics. This focused time in his studio allowed Jody the space to develop three distinct lines of pottery. Each line showcases a unique aspect of the artist’s creativity, from neutral minimalism, to island-inspired hues, to modern elegance. Good Wheel Ceramics is made up of dinnerware, dishes and homewares that contain cozy tactical feeling, while maintaining simple elegance.
In preparation for launching his production studio in Qualicum, BC, Jody has spent 4 month in an intensive Artist-in-Residency focusing on honing his product line and business. To celebrate the conclusion of his residency, he will be showcasing his work at the Nanaimo Ceramic Arts Gallery from March 3rd to 17th. Visitors to this end-of-residency showcase will have the opportunity to experience Jody’s work firsthand as well as exclusive opportunity to pre order dinner ware.
